Carbon Monoxide Safety
Important Safety Information
Carbon monoxide (CO) is extremely dangerous because it is a colourless, odourless, highly poisonous gas.
It is produced by any equipment that burns fuel. As a supplier of power equipment, we want to help customers use their machines safely and understand the risks of carbon monoxide exposure.
Never Use Fuel-Powered Equipment Indoors
The most important way to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning is:
Never use power equipment that produces carbon monoxide indoors or in an enclosed space.
This includes areas such as:
- Garages
- Porches
- Basements
- Sheds
- Other enclosed or partially enclosed spaces
These are not safe locations for generators or water pumps, even if doors and windows are open, as ventilation is usually not sufficient.
Fuel-powered equipment should always be used:
- Outdoors
- In an open space
- With the exhaust directed away from buildings, doors, windows, and other structures
Do Not Install Portable Generators in Enclosed Compartments
Do not install a portable generator in an enclosed area such as:
- A motorhome locker
- A motorboat engine compartment
This applies even if an exhaust extension is fitted.
Exhaust systems can leak, and carbon monoxide can build up quickly with potentially fatal consequences.
Use Carbon Monoxide Detectors
It is strongly recommended that you install a carbon monoxide detector in any nearby building or enclosed space where exhaust fumes could enter.
A detector can provide an early warning if carbon monoxide is building up.
If in Doubt, Get Professional Advice
If you are unsure whether your equipment is being used safely, contact a qualified safety professional who can assess your property and advise on the safest setup.
It is also important to make sure that family members, staff, or anyone else using the equipment understands the risks of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Common Symptoms of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
If you regularly work around machinery that produces carbon monoxide, it is important to recognise the warning signs.
Symptoms may include:
- Headaches
- Drowsiness
- Dizziness
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Confusion
- Weakness
- Convulsions
- Respiratory problems
- Difficulty concentrating
- Behaviour changes
- Personality changes
- Clumsiness
- Severe muscle pain
- Fast heart rate
- Trembling
- Vision problems
- Hearing loss
- Walking difficulties
- Unconsciousness
What to Do if You Notice Symptoms
If you are near machinery that may produce carbon monoxide and begin to feel unwell or experience any of the symptoms above:
- Move to fresh air immediately
- Stop using the equipment
- Seek medical attention as soon as possible
If symptoms are severe, seek emergency medical help immediately.
